“Grown by” means the winery grew the fruit that was used to make the wine inside the bottle.

“Produced by” indicates that the winery conducted the fermentation that converted the fruit juice into wine.

“Bottled by” conveys that the winery took wine from a big container and put it in bottles.

“Cellared by” means that the winery just stored the wine on the premises for a short (or long) time.

On every bottle of our wine, you’ll find the phrase “Grown, Produced, and Bottled by Berryville Vineyards, Claremont, IL” At Berryville we manage the complete supply chain to assure you the finest product. If a label says “Bottled by ABC Winery, City, State”, it means the winery acquired the wine already fermented and they just put it in bottles. If the wine only contains the phrase “Cellared by”, the winery purchased the wine already bottled. So next time you enjoy a bottle of wine, check for this phrase and see if the winery on the label actually “made” the wine.

Grown, produced,
Bottled, & Cellared

With the somewhat recent meltdown in the markets, maybe people will start to wonder more about what they are really getting for their money. Well, our good ole’ government tries to protect the consumer so they know what they’re getting when they consume wine. Wine labels are highly regulated and they must contain a phrase describing the winery’s role in the process.

There is generally four words used to describe the wineries role: Grown, Produced, Bottled, and Cellared. Some try to hide it in small print on the back, while others put it plainly on the front.
